Are you looking to spend some time on the road and wondering how to receive mail when RVing? One of the most asked questions for long-term RVing is “how do I get mail on the road?”. While it might seem like a daunting task, it’s actually quite simple.
Here is everything you need to know about getting mail while on the road!
Why Is It Hard to Receive Mail When RVing?
The biggest challenge when it comes to receiving mail when RVing is you just move too much. There is no way that USPS can track your every move and send mail to your next location. Although that would be awesome!
Another issue is that not all campgrounds accept packages, especially government-run parks. We have discovered that most private parks will allow mail, which is nice. The last main issue when receiving mail is if your mail is delayed. This changes plans because now you have to sit in that spot until it arrives.
How to Receive Mail When RVing?
Thankfully, there are ways to receive mail when RVing and they are very simple. The first is using USPS General Delivery. This is a free service as long as the package is being shipped USPS. They will not accept a Fedex or UPS package and if they do they will likely charge you a large holding fee.
For General Delivery just call the local post office and verify they accept this service, address it to your name with General Delivery, city state zip code. Once the package arrives let the officer know you are there to pick up General Delivery, present your ID and your package will be released to you!
Another option is having things shipped to an Amazon locker. Most major towns have Amazon lockers, making this an easy and fast option. One drawback to an Amazon locker is you can’t have anything larger than the locker shipped to you.
The last and most convenient option is to have things shipped to the RV park you are staying at. We find this to be the best option because you don’t have to drive anywhere to pick up the package. In order to do this, you will need to call the campground to see if you can ship to their park or ask at the front desk when you arrive. If allowed, they will give you the address with any special instructions and you are all set!
Mail Solutions for Full Time RVers
Another issue that arises especially for full time RVing is what to do with everyday mail. Full-time RVers need to have some type of permanent address for bills and other important documents. This is typically the domicile address you will use for your license and registration.
One option is to set it up with a family member that might live nearby and doesn’t mind receiving your mail. If you choose this option, make sure it is someone you can trust and will be able to forward important documents to you in a timely manner. You don’t want to be missing bills, registrations, or other important documents!
If you’d rather not leave this responsibility with a family member, there are many mail forwarding services for the RV community. The way this works is the service will receive your mail, scan it, and email you images of what the mail is. You can then instruct them next steps whether to ship it to you or shred it. This makes it really easy to still get your mail without having to be there to receive it.
There are many services out there for reasonable prices! You should select a mail forwarding service in the same state that you choose to claim domicile in. A few services that have a good reputation include:
- Texas Home Base (for a domicile in Texas)
- Dakota Post (for a domicile in South Dakota)
- Good Sam Mail Service (anywhere in the US)
- Escapees Mail Service (anywhere in the US)
